The Soap Factory Artists-in-Residence Program supports emerging to mid-career artists and curators working across all disciplines and is open to local, regional, national, and internationally-based artists.  We offer one to twelve-month long residencies, creating a shared space for artistic dialogue and international cultural exchange for an extended period of time.

In addition to a private studio, stipends, and housing coordination, residents receive substantial career development support including opportunities to exhibit in our main and lower level galleries, photographic and video documentation, guest studio visits, artist-talks, and public openings. Residency artists also benefit from the A-I-R community; including ongoing dialogue with fellow residency artists, informal gatherings, inter-studio visits and activities, as well as monthly field trips and meals together. The program and facilities are designed to create a community, foster the expansion and exchange of artistic and cultural practices, and provide artists with exposure to the Twin Cities and its arts ecosystem.

The Soap Factory’s Residency Exchange is a 1-2 month placement program, providing emerging and mid-career Minnesota artists support to research, produce, exhibit new works, and explore the artistic, social and cultural context offered by a host city. August - September 2017, four MN artists were invited to participate in a residency at Kultivera in Tranås, Sweden. The Soap Factory will be reciprocating the exchange in our newly renovated building during the summer of 2018. The Soap Factory will also be opening up another opportunity in 2018 for a residency in Tranås, along with other exchanges with partnering residencies and projects abroad.

Each international exchange is unique and aims to provide programming and networking opportunities in addition to travel and material support. For all residency artists, becoming part of a distinct network of cultural establishments, conversations, and communities will enhance the experience of making work in a new city, supported by a valued partnership organization.
